What Causes Stress Anxiety& Depression

One of the reasons many people suffer from stress, anxiety and depression is because of both conscious and unconscious fears and beliefs about themselves and their ability to cope with the world around them.They have underlying concerns for their safety and survival becoming overwhelmed easily, not feeling like life is in their control or that they have the capability to handle life’s stresses and events that present themselves.They simply don’t feel good about themselves. Negative self talk begins to erode away at their self confidence and they feel that nothing they do is good enough or right. Before time, overwhelm and helplessness set in.

The problem today is that we have become a society of “habitual stress responders”. What does this mean? The mechanism of fight or flight was originally designed as a part of our biology for use under “real physical threat”. Today however, many of us have begun to respond to many of our everyday emotional events - as if they were a “real physical threat” to our survival. How many people do you know sit in dread when their boss calls them into the office, even though more times than not, he simply wants to speak about something work related.

Any thought intensely imagined has the same impact to the body as if that event were occurring in real time. This is because for every thought we have,there is a biochemical correspondent that is released into our bodies. When we have anxiety or a stress response we are releasing over 14,000 different biochemical’s into our bodies that stay there for up to 6 hours after the triggering event, even though the thought or event may have lasted less than 3 seconds. It is our response to the things that happen that will determine the impact to our minds and bodies, not what happens to us.

Research demonstrates that if we were to predict illness on stressful life events, we would only be right only 15% of the time. It is the way in which we interpret those events,the thoughts we have about them and how we react to them that will determine if we will become ill from the stress or not. Habitual stress responders are more than likely to become ill.

Your brain is like that CD. Any thought, pattern or behaviour we continue to engage in over time begins to become burned or hardwired into the neural circuitry of your brain. In research carried out by Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, he was able to demonstrate that he could take people who had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and have them rewire their brains in a successful way, allowing them to be free from obsessive thoughts.
